Ten Hot Summer Festivals

Bard on the Beach, Vancouver, B.C.

Citizen
BY REB STEVENSON

The Good Lovelies
The temperature is tolerable and there are so many styles of portable chairs to choose from.
Do you really need another reason to attend an event or festival this summer? If you’ve only got one marked in your daybook so far (that being Canada Day, which is imprinted on your calendar thanks to the manufacturer, so it doesn’t earn you any points) then perhaps you should tailor your summer plans to one or more of these:

Where: Vancouver, B.C.
When: June 3 to September 25
What: Bard on the Beach, a summer-long Shakespeare festival presented against a breathtaking British Columbian backdrop: mountains, sky and ocean. This year’s lineup includes Much Ado About Nothing, Antony and Cleopatra, Falstaff and Henry V.
More info: www.bardonthebeach.org

Where: Pincher Creek, Alberta
When: June 17 - 20
What: Cowboy Poetry Gathering, where cowboy poets and musicians will try to fling a lasso ‘round your heart with something softer than rope: words and feelings. Also includes ranch roping, old fashioned dancing and cowboy church.

Screensaver, anyone?

Greetings readers! I’m just on my way back from a 12-day trip to the UK and Holland. Got a couple of exciting
Anyone for a screensaver?
Sleeping Arounds (yes, I just pluralized Sleeping Around for the very first time even though it sounds awkward, and let me tell you, it feels amazing) visited the blustery seaside haven known as the Isle of
He
Wight and I dropped by Holland’s famous Keukenhof gardens just before the tulips released a cumulative sigh and dropped all their petals into a rotting heap.
Thought I’d share a couple of Holland pix with you. Mostly because it would be weird to post these in November.
In other news, we’re releasing a new
Ed and Jenny episode on Thursday, so be sure to check back here to see it before all of your friends do!

Through the Magnifying Glass

Extraoridnary Measures at Belsay Hall in England
One needn’t nibble on a magic cake to get a glimpse through Alice’s gigantic eyes this summer – an imaginative art installation in Northumberland, England aims to take “visitors of all ages into an Alice in Wonderland world of dark enchantment.” The show, which runs from May 1 to Sept. 26, explores the notions of size and scale. Artists Ron Mueck, Slinkachu and Mat Collishaw have used Belsay Hall – a medieval castle and 19th century Greek revival mansion – as their canvas, planting whimsical surprises like a three-dimensional spinning wheel of imps and butterflies and photographs of tiny day-trippers. German-born artist Mariele Neudecker also adds a “through the looking glass” experience in the quarry garden, and Freddie Robins retells Greek myths using knitted animals, doll house furniture and objects from her own childhood.
Admission to Extraordinary Measures costs £8 for adults, £4 for children and £20 for a family. For more information, visit www.extraordinarymeasures.co.uk or call 01661 881636.
